The 2010 Masters Track season ended with a gold in the high jump and a silver in the long jump. It started with miles and miles of sprinting, jumping and jogging at the UNCC track with my awesome temmates. I was a member of the Carolina's Track and Field Club. For most of my masters track career I had trained by myself. I thoroughly enjoyed the camraderie and encouragement of the coach and the team.
In February I tore my arch on my jumping foot and spent almost two months in a boot. I really thought my season was over. A good friend in the medical field gave me a boot and helped treat my injury. It was humbling. I really had to battle doubts about being able to recover. My training partner Toccata helped me stay focused of rehabing my foot and getting back on the track. By the early summer, I was back to top speed, just in time for the National Championships in Sacremento, California.
One challenge had been overcome but another threatened to break my hopes of competing. With my wife in school full-time and my home-renovation work slowing way down, we didn't have the extra funds for travel expenses. I launched a little campaign on Facebook that helped me raise the money to make the trip. The club also chipped in enough money to buy a plane ticket. In California, I felt so fortunate to be there.
It was an amazing experience. I'm hoping that I can make it to the 2012 meet.
