Professional:

I began my professional career in Columbus, Ohio after recieving a BA in Advertising from the University of South Carolina. I started with a startup ad agency named ViA. I worked in Columbus for only a few months befire ViA transferred me to Portland, Maine. I had never been to Maine, but I remembered my dad was stationed Bangor in the 60's. I went from a junior position at ViA to owning a small agency in just a few years. Our clients ranged from a mid-sized telecom company to a ski resort, a university, a travel agency, to a guy who sold bison meat. We had a great seven person shop and an office that looked out into Casco Bay (over the parking lot and between two buildings).

The bigest lesson I learned in the small advertising and design community in Maine was to connect with my clients needs. The second was like the first, connect to their goals as well. When I say connect, I mean understand, support, protect, invest in. Put my own agenda aside and make them feel like I'm a partner in their company. It was the most difficult lesson, but the most rewarding. I was able to share in the success of my clients and they shared their marketing budgets with me year after year. Most of my clients stayed with me for five, eight or even ten years.
